heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. we believe in the south bay where san jose police shot and killed an man this afternoon after a pursuit. here's new information on the shooting, debra. >> reporter: this shoot shooting caught a chase, in which the police say the suspect rammed three police cars. the 25-year-old suspect was fired on and killed by two pursuing officers who say he refused their orders to surrender and behaved in a threatening manner. this is at the end of a chase which actually began many miles away in campbell. and it lasted some 20-30 minutes at low and high speeds, during which they say he brandished a gun, threw articles out of a car, including a purse that had been recovered. at the end of the pursuit, the suspect was even driving on rims. one of his tires had been blown out. he was initially spotted for

behaving suspiciously. >> if you're driving around, we believe you're involved in suspicious activity and then you point something at the officers and the officer believes it's a gun and then you're ramming police cars, we're thinking who are you, why don't you want to be caught? you must be a pretty dangerous person. >> reporter: how dangerous? what the suspect's background is we have yet to find out. again, this has san jose's first officer-involved shooting of the year and it is a fatality. a 25-year-old man as yet unidentified. there's some suggestion that he actually lives in this neighborhood, and that's why he fled here, because relatives have come out upset at how this ended. we will, of course, have more on this developing story tonight at 10:00. live in san jose, debra villalo, k tvu tv news. crist yapgz cappen is live where this other chase ended. and it wasn't a san francisco

officer who fired the shot. >> reporter: yes, you can see a bullet hole in this fence near this morning's shooting. this morning, we are hearing that the suspect pulled a gun and san francisco police say it was a daly city police officer who fired on that suspect fearing for his own life. san francisco and daly city police investigated for hours this morning following a pursuit that ended with a daly daly city policer shooting and killing a suspect. san francisco police say a daly daly city policer officer initially spotted the car at the intersection of barbara and john daily boulevard. one of their officers spotted the car in the city and gave chase. >> the driver brandished the fire arm at the officers. >> reporter: officers say the driver made a sharp turn from bay shore onto hester and jumped out of the car. the passenger surrendered immediately but the driver ran away with the gun. >> the police officers approached the fleeing driver who then raised his gun at the

officers. a police officer fearing for his life discharged the fire arm at the suspect. >> that round hit the suspect in the chest. he died from his injuries. neighbors say the road here loops around on itself making a get away nearly impossible. >> when they come through here, they have to come back up this way. there's no other way to go. >> reporter: a san francisco investigator says they've questioned the passenger from this point in the car. it's unclear if he'll be charged with anything in this case. we've talked with daly city police and called them throughout the day. so far, they have not returned any of our calls. we are live in san francisco, christian cappen, ktvu, channel 2 news. a united airlines plane made a safe landing at san francisco airport after the pilot declared an emergency. the airbus 319 was heading to sfo from vancouver. shortly before landing, the pilot told controllers he had hydraulic problems.

the plane landed safely but had to be towed to the gate. 107 passengers were on board but nobody was injured. oakland police are investigating a double homicide. police tell us they were called to apricot and glennheim streets for reports of gun shots just after 4:00 this morning. a man and woman were found in the street and both were pronounced dead at the scene. police are still woshing to identify the victims and they have no arrests. the shootings marks oakland's 14th and 15th homicides this year. police in pallo alto are also investigating a homicide. a 22-year-old was killed and a juvenile was hurt in a shooting around 6:00 last night. investigators say he argued with someone in a black vehicle and a person inside that vehicle then opened fire. police tonight are still searching for the shooter. the santa clara sheriff's office says more than 1,000 guns were collected at a gun buyback today. organizers say about 100 cars

were lined up two hours before the buy back even started. the sheriff's office says most of the weapons collected were hand guns and rifles, which were worth about $100 each but several assault weapons were also turned in for $200. one participant said every gun collected counts. >> one in 100 might end up in the wrong hands and if you get that one off the street, that's a good thing. >> so far, no word on how much money was handed out during today's buy back, but sheriff's officials say they did not run out of money and even extended the hours of the event. the event was paid for by public funds for the county. in hayward, a road crew hit a gas main closing a major thoroughfare. construction crews hit a two-inch gas line last night. a number of businesses, including restaurants, a gas station and a bar were evacuated while pg & e worked to get the line capped. it took the utility about six hours to repair that line.

a heelsberg man is in critical condition after a house fire this morning. firefighters say they found 44-year-old troy vocal lying outside his home. he had second and third degree burns over much of his body and flown to sacramento for treatment. investigators say they believe it started in the kitchen, possibly in the stove. relatives of a missing hayward woman spent the day looking for any sign of samantha tuya, she was last seen on february 19th. they said today she missed her scheduled visit with her six-year-old daughter. police don't suspect foul play but they say her family is very worried because they say she has the mental capacity of a young teenager. her family and volunteers spent the day posting flyers. there are reports tonight that a loop hole allowed an alleged santa cruz gunman to fall off the radar. he had a history of sex crimes

before he fatally shot two police detectives on tuesday. they say he was accused of peeping through windows in three different cities and there were also accusations of rape by two women in hawaii and an attempted murder in oregon. the santa cruz sentinel is reporting that police say he never appeared on two law enforcement computer databases that track criminals because he was only convicted of misdemeanors. the memorial for those two officers is scheduled for thursday, march 7 at noon at the hp pavilion in san jose. the service was moved from a smaller venue to handle the thousands that are expected to come pay their respects. ktvu will be covering the service live starting at 7:00 a.m. and will be streaming it live on ktvu.com. a san jose man is under arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run we told you become b last week. steven harry heath was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run yesterday.

george black was killed as he walked along montgomery drive in santa rosa last week. witnesses saw a light four-door mercedes speed away. police impounded his car. president obama said today that actually he laid into republican lawmakers a day after he signed into law the massive across the board budget cuts known as the sequester. >> it's happening because congress chose this outcome over a fix on how to cut the deficit. >> president obama wants to close the fiscal gap with what he calls a balanced approach of spending cuts and tax hikes. republicans, however, say they will not concede again on taxes after giving in during negotiations over the fiscal cliff at the new year. after a meeting with the president about the sequester,

nancy pelosi was back in san francisco addressing the coalition of black women. we spoke to the congresswoman about the impact of those cuts on bay area families. >> talking about the sequester, what does that word mean? >> reporter: at a fundraiser for the san francisco national coalition of 100 black women, house minority leader nancy pelosi talked about the importance of strong women and what it will take to bolster mothers and children. she says the sequester, billions of dollars in cuts now in effect, will devastate families across california, including thousands of children who won't benefit from early education through headstart. >> when those kids can't go to headstart, they'll be home, their moms will not be able to go to work. think of what that does to the families. >> reporter: families can also expect student loan cuts and cuts in unemployment benefits. proceeds from this afternoon's team will go toward the group's employment and training program. the woman we talked with here

say the cuts will disproportionately affect women and minority. >> it's devastating and so shameful that we cannot work in a bipartisan way. >> reporter: but the jobs continue. >> instead of campaigning for higher taxes, the president should lead an effort to begin addressing our nation's spending problem. >> reporter: but what they're saying is, we want big oil over little kids in head start. >> that's a debate that we have to take to the public. i don't think that's a blame game. >> reporter: the president seemed hopeful in his weekly address today. he said there's a caucus of common sense out there, and he'll continue to seek out those leaders from both sides. in san francisco, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the fed will keep interest rates low, as long as the economy remains week. the fed chairman spoke at the conference sponsored by the san francisco federal reserve.

bernanke said premature rate increases could short circuit the economic recovery. they have a goal of keeping the interest rate near zero until unemployment falls below 6.5%. the controversy over women and rape has been reopened. celest greg, the head of the republican california assembly was asked comments about todd akin. akin derailed his senate hopes by saying that women's bodies can shut down during, quote, legitimate rape. greg told the san jose news his remarks were insensitive. then she added, quote, the percentage of pregnancies due to rape is small because it's an act of violence because the body is traumatized. however, studies have shown that this is not the case. there are new developments tonight with that massive sinkhole in florida where crews are talking about the feat of

[ whip cracks ] fire crews in southern california say they expect to have this winter wild fire fully contained in just a couple of hours. the wind-driven fire broke out thursday in river side county. at first, the flames forced some voluntary evacuations. cal fire says the 311 acre fire is right now about 80% contained.

officials in florida have now called off the effort to recover the body of a man swallowed by a sinkhole. jeff bush was in his bedroom thursday night when the ground suddenly opened up. rescue officials have used devices to try to detect any signs of life but have been unsuccessful, and he is presumed dead. engineers spent much of the day today testing the unstable ground around the sinkhole and say it's become too dangerous to enter the house. >> the sinkhole is extremely large. it's huge, extending down 50-60 feet. with all the equipment that we've brought in with specialized help, we just have not been able to locate mr. bush. >> officials plan to begin demolishing the home tomorrow. engineers determined the house next door is also in danger from the sinkhole and the people who live there were given about 30 minutes today to get what they could out of their home. news of the world tonight, government officials say president huggo chavez is undergoing chemotherapy.

this is the first official mention of chemotherapy since mr. chavez underwent cancer surgery in cuba. chavez should be either sworn in for his new term or declare himself incapable and call for a new election, some say. the constitution says he should have been sworn in on january 10 but venezuela's supreme court approved a delay. egyptian protesters set fire to a police station. the violence came while secretary of state john kerry called on government and opposition leaders to find common ground. kerry is in cairo on the sixth leg of a nine-nation swing through europe and the middle east, his first since becoming secretary of state. in north korea, video was released of leader kim jun ung and dennis rodman watching a basketball game. the former star flew to north korea with three members of the harlem globetrotters and a do you meanary film crew.

he and kim jung watched the game later, and he later called the dictator an awesome guy. the us state department has distanced himself from rodman saying he doesn't represent the united states. a san mateo sheriff's office says there have been several break-ins in the highlands neighborhood. sheriffs official say it happened on bell air road and enchanted way near star light drive. residents are reminded to lock doors and remove all valuable items. the federal government says it's going to accept private bids for hangar 1. they will begin accepting bids this spring. the future of the air field has been uncertain since toxins were discovered on the site in 2003. google cofounders have previously offered to pay the cost of restoring the hangar, but that's in exchange for permission to restore their planes at the site.

dozens of bay area nurses and doctors spent the day giving back to the community. about 30 uninsured patients got some same-day surgical procedures today at kaiser permanente today all for free. it's part of a program called operation access. over the past 20 years, it's helped thousands of low income patients. one man had double cataract surgery, a procedure he says he could not afford on his own. >> if it wasn't for operation access, my only other option would have been to go blind, seriously. >> it's a wonderful opportunity to kind of give back to the community and help those who don't normally have access, to get the help they need. >> and about 100 doctors, and nurses and anesthesiologists took part. people generally refer to this program by local credit. >> good for them. what a difference, today, cloudy and kind of great out there. yesterday, beautiful sunshine, but we are still in winter, right mark? >> yes, it almost felt like hawaii today, stepping off the airplane with warm, muggy conditions. we have some raindrops to talk

about over the next few days. tonight and tomorrow, a chance of a few sprinkles and light showers. here's our camera looking out toward the bay. temperatures today max out again in the lower 70s so another mild day across most of the bay area. right now on live storm tracker 2, here you can see some coverage. most of this not reaching the ground. take a look at some of the observations around the region, especially in the north bay. still lots of cloud cover, most of this falling way up above in the sky, so still we have the chance of a few sprinkles and light showers in the north bay and in the short term. as far as temperatures right now, they are dropping off. it's still kind of warm out there. san jose 61. downtown san francisco, 53, and oakland in the upper 50s at 57. for tonight, we'll continue to thicken up the cloud cover. a chance of a few sprinkles and a few light showers. lots of cloud cover for your sunday wskies becoming partly cloudy by late in the afternoon. it's going to take a while.

and then some real raindrops return in the extended. dropping down to the 40s and lower 50s tonight. so not too cold out there with the cloud cover coming into the region. here's a picture of the satellite, you'll see the moisture moving in from the south and the west. once again, the radar, a lot of this not reaching the ground just yet. as we take this into your sunday, this cold front moves in and could provide enough dynamics to squeeze out a few light showers and sprinkles for tonight, and once again into sunday. highest chance with the positioning of this cold front will be in the north bay neighborhoods. here's our forecast model showing you a lot of cloud cover tonight and a chance of some shower activity moving into the region. not too generous of the coverage tomorrow morning at 9:00. look what happens by tomorrow afternoon, by 1:00, some showers developing in parts of the north bay, lake county, moving toward sonoma and nappa counties and still a factor by mid-afternoon.
